Testing The Waters
The image of someone jumping into the water during a frigid January on Cape Cod may seem a bit strange. This image, however, is what comes to mind when I counsel organizations about the potential of their fund raising programs.
Whether an organization plans a capital campaign or an endowment campaign, proper research and planning are essential. To test the potential of fund raising, we recommend a Development Study (sometimes called a feasibility study). This study entails personal interviews with 30 to 40 stake-holders and takes between 6 and 8 weeks to complete.
We believe in the saying "If you want advice, ask for money but if you want money, ask for advice." The purpose of this Development Study is to ask for advice. Our program is a hybrid effort that combines features of a feasibility study, marketing study and S.W.O.T. (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) Analysis. A Development Study gives your organization the information and confidence to move forward, or not, with a major fund raising campaign.
